Carpenter Owl is a building studio based in Bloomington, IN that specializes in creating unique structures from natural materials. We design and build around the needs and wants of our clients, creating environments that are low in chemicals and allergens. We attempt to use reclaimed and locally sourced materials wherever possible, believing fundamentally in a need for sustainability.
We offer the opportunity for our clients to be involved in the entire process from concept to finish. No building experience is necessary. Please refer to our DIY section if you would like to know more. Most of our structures are custom and fall into the categories of tiny homes, studios, or excursion structures.

Honey on the Rock
Report
This is our most ambitious build to date and was created as a vacation home built around a family's heirloom whiskey still.
The whiskey still is hidden inside a copper topped table with a 4K Dwarf brand wood stove on top.
There is a secret door behind a drawing of the home that leads from the the bed loft to the outdoor soaker tub.
The bed is kingsize with his and her porthole windows flanking the sides and a 6' wide operable window at the head.
The shower is made of an elastic stucco with a slate shelf and hand laid spiral mosaic floor.

This is our most wack-a-do, wonderful little house built for a herbalist living in the mountains of North Carolina.
This whimsical, custom tiny home was built as part of Carpenter Owl's DIY program, a program where the owner assists in the build.
The bed loft is called "the bed pod" and is made with clear polycarbonate down the sides and over the top.
The entry door is on the third loft to minimize the number of stairs needed inside the home to access the 4 levels.
There is a secret door in the kitchen that allows one to easily load in groceries and firewood.

Custom Projects

To ensure that custom builds are as close to our client's dream as possible we go through a 3 stage process.
The process starts with a free consultation that when possible is done in person at Carpenter Owl's studio and home.
During this stage we visit one or two tiny homes and talk in depth about your tiny home dream.
If the consultation indicates a good fit we will start the design process.
The intention of the design process is to produce a set of CAD drawings for the project.
The design project is charged at an hourly rate and the drawing are provided as a deliverable at the end.

Q and A

Living and building tiny is curious to folks and thus I get asked many a fine question.
These questions inspired me to put together this clearing house page.
Here I will cover everything from my tiny home philosophy to the nuts and bolts of construction.
If you don't see your question here email me and I will answer it and add it to the collection.
Why I live in a tiny home?
I built Snails Away to protect the integrity of my empathetic nature as I glean ideas from the world, digest, and share.
I greatly enjoy having a mobile space that lets me sketch different lives.
