The Carpenter's Boat Shop is dedicated to nurturing and enriching lives through the practices of building wooden boats, living in community, and serving others. Our core program is the Four-Month Apprenticeship, run in the spring and the fall, while during the summer we offer a variety of shorter-term workshops and programs to the public. The Apprenticeship is a unique opportunity for adults of all ages to take a deliberate time of reflection and skill-building as they search for new direction in their lives.
Through daily work in the woodshop, reflection, and living out service to others at home and in the community, we learn about ourselves and each other. The skills we practice range from the technical, to self-awareness, to interpersonal, as we navigate the joys and challenges of living and working closely with others. We welcome all comers to tea-time at 10:00 AM each weekday (holidays and vacation times excepted).
We would love to host you for a hot drink, a snack, and conversation.

We have over 40 years of experience in small-to-medium wooden boat building and restoration.
Our work directly supports apprentices that come to live and learn the craft of boatbuilding.
Please stop by to see our facilities and meet our restoration manager and let us help you restore your wooden boat!

Extended community is an essential part of The Carpenter's Boat Shop experience.
We welcome all friends, new and old, to visit the Boat Shop.
Please come by to meet the apprentices, tour the workshop, view boats for sale, or just to catch up!
Every weekday between 10-10:20am we pause from our work and enjoy Tea Break with each other and visitors from the community.
It is a wonderful time for folks to drop and see what we are working on, meet our apprentices (between September and June), and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee along with a sweet or savory treat!

The Carpenter's Boat Shop Apprenticeship is a 4-month commitment; the fall session runs from late August to mid-December, and the spring apprenticeship runs from February to the end of May.
The program is tuition-free: we provide on-campus room and board with the expectation that participants will work hard building boats, sharing in meal preparation, and maintaining the facilities.
We seek applicants of all backgrounds, age 18 and older.
The Carpenter's Boat Shop provides a rare opportunity to pause in the midst of life's challenges and take stock.

We are not a school.
Although we do have a curriculum, we do not specifically train each apprentice to be a professional boatbuilder.
We are, however, a learning opportunity.
A motivated apprentice has available to them the resources and opportunities to learn a good deal about building a small wooden boat, and many other skills as well.
Our apprentices learn in proportion to the effort they put in.
We are not here just to learn about boats.
Boatbuilding is a key vehicle for our work of building greater understanding and compassion for ourselves and others.
